Arabica Coffee Beans

Arabica coffee beans are grown all over the world, from Latin America to parts of Africa and Asia. It is believed that Arabica beans were the first type of coffee beans that were ever cultivated, and they have been used for more than a millennium in some parts of Africa. Today, Arabica coffee beans still account for the majority of coffee that is produced.

Gathering Arabica coffee beans, however, can take many years from the time that the shrubs are first planted. Under the ideal conditions, it can take as many as seven years for the plant, coffea Arabica, to grow to its full size. After a few years, the plants begin to produce fruit, the seeds of which are the coffee beans. Coffee producers, however, must harvest the coffee beans at just the right time, as waiting too long or not long enough will produce a coffee with weak or bitter flavor.

Arabica coffee beans are distinguished from other coffee beans in part by their lower caffeine content. Arabica coffee beans can be brewed separately or combined with other coffee beans to form a blend. The flavor of the Arabica beans depends largely on the region where they are grown. The variety grown in Ethiopia, for instance, has often been likened to a good Chianti, while others have hints of spices, chocolate or nuts.
